Springtime in MEA Backyard
The nice thing about writing for a blog is it forces you to be honest with yourself. If you’re not there’s not much to write about and what you do write is copycat stuff already on the Net. Not for me thank you.
Springtime finds Janet and I on our hands and knees preparing our beautiful yards for summers full bloom. Our yards are large with huge swaths of grass in both the front and back bordered on most sides by perennial and annual gardens. Our Dogwood and Crabapple trees burst onto this year’s scene in full splendor a few days ago and our tulips in the front oval garden under the flowering crabapple look redder than usual this year.
Any “passer by” views our yards as glorious visions to behold and we receive many compliments each year on their beauty.
But dang it, if I’m not “fussin” and “cussin” about that small patch of weeds way in the backyard grass by the tree line where no one sees them but me. And then there’s that pesky mole already leaving concave trails of grass in his wake I’d like to get my hands on. The old Oak trees in the back side yard next to the house need pruning from this past winter’s storm damage and our unique double blooming tall Iris’s could use some support.
As caretakers of these beautiful yards Janet and I often forget just how beautiful they really are and find we focus on small imperfections more than they deserve.
It takes a concentrated effort on our part to take a time out, walk back a few steps and appreciate the yards and their beauty as a whole. When we do take the time, all the blemishes disappear and lose their depressing power to ruin nature’s colorful springtime portrait unique to our yards.
My Ebay Adventure is similar to our yard. When my four-month adventure is viewed in total I get a realistic picture of my achievements and distance traveled. I feel a sense of accomplishment and renewed energy to continue my journey. When I focus with myopic determination on pulling weeds in my ebay adventure my realistic picture blurs and I quickly become lost in a spider’s web of details above my current ability to untangle.
My Ebay Adventure is also like my yard in that it can be viewed by “passers by”. I am cognizant of this and my human nature wants to project flowers not weeds. Who likes to look at weeds anyway?
The difference between “My Ebay Adventure” and my yard is my yard is mature and only requires maintenance. This adventure is still in its infancy. Those who chose to follow it for the long haul will see me out in “MEA’S” backyard tending to my flowers and also pulling patches of weeds. In this, the beginning leg, of my ebay adventure there will no doubt be times when it appears my weeds are overtaking my flowers and in fact they may be.
This is a genuine adventure. Like a real adventure my success is not predetermined. Our society demands instant success and worships those who find it without effort. My life is not one of instant success. In every effort I’ve laid my back too success has ultimately come to me but it has never been easy.
Those following “My Ebay Adventure” should be warned this will not be an overnight success story. If it were it would not be a genuine adventure. It would be an aberration from the normal every day “Joe” just trying to “make it” on ebay. If I were a single man with only myself to carry on my adventure I could move with reckless abandon yielding quicker results. Alas that is not my circumstance nor would I have it any other way.
The weight I carry I must grow into and learn to balance with grace and ease at the same time I move forward with boldness and clarity.
It is springtime in the backyard of my ebay adventure. Time to step back and appreciate the big picture and small accomplishments.
