Woot is a Hoot

Whenever I start thinking I’m a bit “tweaked” in the head, I simply click on my www.woot.com Firefox bookmark and read a new Woot sales pitch for their product of the day. Being “tweaked” in the head must be a job requirement, scribbled down in the Woot Company Handbook by their fresh out of college Human Resource majors.

If my eBay adventure ever crashes and burns I’m going to send my resume over to Woot.com immediately, if not sooner, as I’m confident what’s left my fried green tomato brain cells will fit right in, as evidenced by my very first eBay auction.

Each morning at www.woot.com, their creative writers, think up a crazy fun story to promote a practical new product selling on the front page of their increasingly popular website.

This mornings “Woot of the day” is for a refurbished Sandisk Sansa e260 Media Player. Woot writers cleverly give each daily product sales pitch a title and story line. Take a look at some of the 188 reader comments (this total changes dramatically) already generated for this morning’s offering.

Reading these ingenious little Woot stories that bring boring “on-the-shelf” products to life should be required reading for all eBay auction sellers. It also gives me an idea to be explore here on my eBay adventure. Every so often……I’m going to post my own “tweaked” story about a product I’m currently selling on eBay.

One finally warning about Woot, before I eat my morning mix of oatmeal, raisins, brown sugar, milk and bananas.

Be very careful not to get too hooked on Woot or you may end up bidding on their wildly popular “BOC”, more commonly known as “Bag O Crap” auction. You’ve been warned. If like many, you have got to know what’s inside that “Woot Bag of Crap” then maybe Wootalyzer can help you win.

I’ve been studying this a bit, having seen the huge successes folks have when integrating stories on eBay auctions. Ie, a well written story even on mundane items, seems to really capture folks attention, resulting in some amazing auction prices.

Having followed woot, since the early days, I never put 2+2 together, but I think if they had not started out with tweaked articles and stories…. woot might never have gotten the organic growth to get off the ground. Its a fascinating business model for sure.

I’m totally blown away at Woot’s success. My daughter turned me on to Woot about 8 months ago. She’s 25 now and dying to find out what’s in that Woot Bag O Crap.

I asked her why she needs to know and she said “just because”. This deep answer is coming from a Bio-Technology Major with a Master’s Degree. But she’s my girl :-)
